Compare/Contrast Writers - 1706 Words
There are various things that make up a piece of literature. For example: choice of diction, modes of discourse, and figurative language. Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano were great examples of authors that used these elements of literature. There are similarities and differences in A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson and From Africa to America. Though Mary Rowlandson and Olaudah Equiano shared similarities in experiences, they had different writing personalities, purposes, attitudes, tones, and relations with their communities. There are four main modes of discourse: expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive. Rowlandson communicated with the people she was surrounded by. Olaudah Equiano showed that he was more introvert than Mary Rowlandson because h e did not attempt to have any sort of conversation with another being. He only spoke of what he saw going on in the lives of the people around him in his story, and there was no dialogue. Mary Rowlandson’s personality was more apparent than Olaudah Equiano’s because she showed that she was a caring woman. She did not want to leave her child behind, even though it was already dead. Mary was also caring and loving because she took the time to go through bible scriptures and Psalms with another woman to give her the hope and guidance she needed from their Lord. Following the Lord was one of Mary’s main purposes in life. Mary Rowlandson used the rhetoric device appeal to authority in her literature. She spoke of God as if He were somehow relevant to every aspect of her life, whereas Equiano mainly used appeal to emotion in his work. Countries grwo at different rates, this is partly due to the fact that they are at different stages of their economic cycle. The economic growth for the UK is at 0.2%. The main measure of output is gross domestic product (GDP). GDP is the total value of goods and services produced in an economy during one year. Economic growth can be be measured in nominal terms which include inflation, or real terms which are adjusted for inflation. As a student, I am aware of my susceptibility to many forms of improper writing techniques that hinder my ability to produce a well-written paper. While I was aware of most of these incorrect practices, I found myself unfamiliar with many ideas covered in the preliminary chapters of Who Says? The Writer’s Research. Prior to reading chapters 1, 3, 4, and 9, I had never acknowledged the concept of information literacy and all of its various components. Admittedly, I had previously regarded literacy as the ability to read and write, and never thought it could be a method of interpreting information. Furthermore, I found the many ways in which plagiarism is manifested into a writing very interesting, as I had never been aware of other forms of plagiarism besides copying a text word for word. Answers: Introduction Section 51(xxvi) of the Constitution of Australia authorises the commonwealth of Australia to erect any special law that applies to any people.[1]In Kartiniyeri,[2]the High Court was asked if section 51(xxvi) of the Australian Constitution could be a tool for the legislation that adversely discriminated on the basis of the race[3]. The court was split in relation to the decision in this case. Gaudron J provided that the validity of the legislation cannot be questioned and there is no significant reason to doubt the validity of the legislation under section 51 (XXVI) of the constitution. It was in addition, stated by the judge, that not only did section 51 validate the Act, but also provided authority to repeal it partially. The judge did not think that the parliament had the power to repeal the Heritage Act[4] by comparing it to the Bridge Act and it would thus remain a law. This is because for such reasons false assumptions have to be made namely that section 51 does not provide the power to amend or real laws and second same characteristics cannot be possessed by law enacted to repeal another law[7]. On the other hand, the respected Judge also opined that that there was no way to properly come to the conclusion that the power granted under the above mentions section were confined to the erection of laws that do not discriminate against the interests of the people of a particular race on a large scale or extent.[8] Although it was a special law it was adversely discriminatory and detrimental against the aboriginal people of Australia with respect to their race. Therefore the legislation did not fall within the class of provisions Australian constitution in relation to race power permits. In addition there is no other head of power which has been found in the constitution to provide support to the bridge act and thus it is totally unconstitutional.[9] Conclusion In Kartiniyeri, the main issue that the court dealt with was the interpretation of section 51 of the Australian Constitution with references to part (xxvi) and its application to the indigenous people. The court has to consider whether the Parliament had the authority to make beneficial or discriminatory laws. It was found that the Parliament could make any laws for any race whether they were detrimental or beneficial, it did not matter. 2.The effects of the proposed referendum The referendum is related to providing power to the aboriginals with respect to monitoring the use of section 51(xxvi) towards law making. If such referendum is incorporated the first nation would evidently not agree with the majority towards the enactment of laws as they would only want laws which are made in their interest and as a result a conclusion would be hard to reach. The incorporation of the first nation into the constitution would provide that the rights which the parliament has been provided by section 51(xxvi) of the constitution would be constrained further. By having a say in the kind of laws that would have an effect the Indigenous people, it would help the law makers and interpreters of law understand how to build the pathway to peace with the aggrieve aboriginals. It will provide as an extrinsic evidence which was missing in interpretation of s51Kartinyeri.[10] Under s 51 (xxvi) the federal governmenthad the power to make national laws for everyone but excluded the Aboriginals.
